Sectarianism in Australia today?

After having completed the activity "What is Sectarianism" and in particular having read the SMH article please post a comment on this blog.

Is religious sectarianism alive in Australia today? Is the Cambden's communities opposition to a Muslim school an example of sectarianism? What fears are sparking the opposition? How could such fears be overcome?

Remember to be respectful of others in your comments!

I think that it is unfair that the parents are discarsed about the fact that their children don't even speak muslim. but muslim isn't even a language.

I don't think it's about prejudice or discrimination- they should build a Muslim school in a community which is predominantly Muslim. This would make it more convenient for people of the community and attract a higher number of students.

Its fair enough that the parents and community want to build the school, as there children are beinning bullied and leaft out at normal schools. However going to mixed schools would be good as the mix with different races. As they grow up they live in a mixed world, not just there own race, I understand where the resisdence come from if there is traffic congestions however they shhould alocate a spot where they can build there school.

The Islamic school should be able to be built but if there is a problem with where it is suppose to be built they should be biult down the road. People should get their facts right before they judge people. It's not all Muslims that use their wife and kids as bombs. People are just being judgmental to these people. And for a fact Muslim is not even a language.! But the islamic cmmonuity should able to biuld their school it is a free counrtry and they have the same rights as everyone else.

i believe we should all treat people equaly as you would like the be treated but at the same time i understand were residents are comming from because of the sterotypes muslim people have on them but just cause your muslim doesnt mean your a terroists

everyone should be given the right to their own religious practices. There is more than just one religion occuring within this world...

They should be able to do what they want even if people are hating on them. Australia shouldn't be haters because these people are humans to and deserve the same respect!

i believe thats it's extreamly rude that the council wont let the school go to plans as i think that because the muslim children taht are currently attenting the catholic schools are getting harrsased so what they are trying to do is to make there own communuity so that they are not beign critisized. and i understand that the council has said that it would case to much traffic if thats the case then they should move it to another location not just throw out the whole application.

there is much i want to say
i have a brother in law who is a Muslim.
and he grow up fine in just a normal public school.
i think that they shouldnt get there own school because soon you will get the indians coming along or the chinese saying they want there own school and there isnt enough room in austrlia for cultural schools.
the words spoken by the resistands in the area wasnt very nice.
they didnt need to be spoke to in that way.
i think it would be best if they just made a public school that way anyone and everyone can attend
there wouldnt be any rag differents.

i think the opposition to the building of the Muslim school can be seen as sectarianism. they are afraid of other cultures but do not see the advantages of a diverse range of cultures in a school. every person should be treated equally dispite religious cultures.

I agree with Bettina.
Although it is hard to justify not building a Muslin school.
Because if Australia's "multiculturalist" it would allow this to happen but would building this School discourage multiculturalism.

I can understand where they're coming from, because its not a predominantly Muslim area.
We don't have schools that are specifically for white people, i think its discrimination on their side.

the camden councils opposal of the muslim school is entiarly racest and that kate woman should be taken to jail as should all the people who were strongly opposing it
we may be in australia and everyone may have a right to their oppinon or whatever but if its racest the should be triled in a court of law.
the excuse of conjestion is a load of trash every school has conjestion including the public schools in camden and the new proposal for the catholic school it will cause conjestion.
so i think the people of camden need to grow up and if they wanna live with just anglo saxon people they can go live in the middle of australia in the desert then they will be gaurented that no one that isnt white and christian and agrees with their racest values will leave them alone like they want to be. these people disgust me who think they are better than any one else just because their from somewhere else
also the kate woman was arguing about when musilims move into areas they cause trouble and FORCE The orignal residents away
i can tell you obvously the orignal residents of these areas are racest like the people of camden and moved away
the muslim school should be approved!!
